Josefina Holmlund's landscape studies, which were painted in the open air,  constitute an important part of the development of the Swedish outdoor painting.  Usually they are undated, which makes it difficult to determine where the motifs are taken from. Even stylistically, they are difficult to date.


Holmlund was widely traveled.  She studied in Düsseldorf at the beginning of the 1860's and made trips to Italy, France, Norway and Finland.


Holmlund studied in the 1850's at Theodor Billing Art Academy and in Edvard Bergh's landscape school.  Billing was the first Swedish artist to visit Fontainebleau where, in contact with French artists, he performed plein-air studies.  As a teacher at the Academy of Landscape Painting, he encouraged his students to paint directly in nature in parallel with studio work.
